AI NPC mods: plan the setup before the conversation.
An AI NPC demonstration is only part of the installation story. Check the base game, inference service and voice pipeline before giving a mod access to your saves, microphone or credentials.
Start with compatibility and a recoverable installation.
Read the creator instructions for the exact game edition, patch and mod-loader versions. Back up saves and your current mod profile before following the project-specific installation steps. Check how the mod is disabled or removed, and whether existing saves remain usable afterward.
Keep changes bounded. Do not replace a full working mod collection simply because a video used a different configuration. Review dependencies and conflicts in the official project instructions.
Separate local models, hosted models and voice.
Local inference: check the documented memory, hardware and model-file requirements. A downloadable mod does not necessarily include its model weights. Review the model license independently of the mod license.
Hosted inference: check provider account requirements, usage pricing, rate limits and what happens when the endpoint is unavailable. Keep API keys in the documented local configuration, not in screenshots, public repositories or shared mod packs.
Voice: speech recognition and speech generation may be separate components. Check whether audio leaves your device, whether microphone access is optional and which voices or voice models are licensed for use.
Check conversation behavior and privacy.
- What game context can the mod read, and what can the NPC change?
- Are conversations saved locally, transmitted to a provider or both?
- Can you reset character memory or stop the model without damaging a save?
- What does the creator say about dialogue delay, unsupported requests and failure handling?
- Are installation instructions current for the exact release you downloaded?
Model-generated dialogue can be unexpected. Check the project controls and content guidance before using it in a shared or family setting.
Keep demonstrations separate from supported downloads.
A creator video can help you understand the experience, but use the official repository or release instructions for installation. Confirm that a demonstration names the same version as the downloadable package.
Browse the Modport project library, compare the different types of AI games, and use the download checklist before running a package. Availability and review status come from the live project cards, not this guide.
